Changes and opportunities for waste management in Ireland were examined at the Transformations workshop, which took place in Ballymascanlon Hotel, Dundalk on Monday 8th, November. Interreg Cross Border Waste Awareness Campaign sponsored the event.

The event featured case studies by way of a video presentation, which described the day-to-day activities of eight firms North and South of The Border.

• Shabra Plastics and Packaging is located in Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. Rita Shah and Oliver Brady founded it in l986 and it supplies recycled plastic bags to Musgrave Super Value Centra group, Stonehouse, Atlas Industries and Pan Pac. Rita Shah was named Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 and 02BPW Business Woman of the Year November 2003.

• Kosmos Glass Recycling is based in Belfast. It collects waste glass from hotels, public houses and restaurants for re processing through a Krysteline machine to produce a sterile ground glass product.

• Quinn Glass, based in Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh is Ireland’s largest glass reprocessor with an outstanding track record of success in securing major contracts with global companies.

• Spanboard Products Ltd is based in Coleraine. It makes chipboard including value added products such as melamine faced chipboard and tong-and-groove flooring. Sonea, the largest privately owned company in Portugal took over Spanboard Products Ltd in l989. Spanboard Ltd annually uses approximately 120,000 tonnes of Irish Timber; of which around 20,000 tonnes is recycled wood – half coming from Northern Ireland and the remaining half from Southern Ireland.

• T-Met is a metal re processor located in Dungannon. It collects scrap steel from various sources – engineering firms to scrap cars from locations in Northern Ireland. It collects approximately 100 tonnes daily with up to 100 skips and 50 of 20ft x10ft bins used in the collection process. The scrap steel is processed ie reduced to its smallest size and then shipped to Spanish Steel mills. The Company ships out between four and five thousand tonnes of steel scrap on a monthly basis.

The tyres are processed at the modern plant at a rate of 880an hour or 8,000 over two work shifts. Rubber crumbs are used for many purposes – filling for playground surfaces; as a surface in equestrian centres; as an alternative to wood bark for weed free maintenance in gardens; as rubber cobblelock; astro turf and for a range of other areas. The firm is experiencing great difficulty in securing adequate supplies of tyres.

• Natural Wood Products is a composting business based in Keady, Co. Armagh, which is responsible for 40% of all Northern Ireland green recycling. It takes in and composts 35,000 of green waste annually from many of Northern Ireland 26 District Councils. It is the first compost producer in Northern Ireland to achieve certification from The Composting Association to BS1 Pas 100 – the quality certification for composted materials.
